About

Hi, my name is Brett Day and I would like to share a story about me, and why I have made this blog.

Back in my teen years (yes it was a while ago) I weighed 215lb and was generally happy. I am originally from England and my family ate healthy foods for the most part. At age 18 I met my now Wife who is from Oklahoma, USA. We married after 3 years of dating I moved to, Oklahoma, USA in 2001.

When I arrived I settled in quickly to life in the USA. I love the lifestyle in the USA., and I quickly became used to the lifestyle of convenience. Drive through restaurants, drive through banks, pharmacies, and so on. Thing were just not set up this way in England. If you wanted to go somewhere you had to walk, or at least get out of your car, so the convenience of everything was great.

As the years went by I slowly, but surely gained weight. Working 65 hours a week in the retail industry made it hard to get home to good healthy meals, so drive thru fast food meals pretty much became part of my life.

While at work one day I badly hurt my back. I had to have a spinal fusion, and needed to have an artificial disc implanted into my back. The surgery was successful in the fact that it cured my pain, but then another set back. As a result of the surgery I started suffering from a condition called RSD.

Me at my heaviest. 333.6

RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystropy) is a progressive form of nerve damage that affects the Sympathetic Nervous system. Pain from this condition is unlike anything else. More painful than child birth, more painful than amputation, and more painful than some cancers. This pain ravages you 24 hours a day.

Needless to say that after my surgery I could not get around as good as I used to. The healing process from the surgery was long, and the pain from the RSD reduced me to tears, but what was even worse than those two things was my health. I was quickly going down a very steep slope.

Then October 13th 2011 rolled around. I looked in the mirror and was disgusted at what I saw. I weighed myself and was devastated. The scales stopped at 333.6lbs. I knew I had to do something.

I know this will be hard and very painful, but I am determined to lose the weight and hit a goal of 200lb. I owe it to myself and my family. I hope that I can inspire many other people to join me on this journey to a healthier life.

All the best,

Brett Day

  6. There is nothing I like more than to see people who have succeeded through adversity, not because I’m happy that people have had to suffer so much in the first place – but because I think what people are capable of enduring and overcoming when they decide that they want to change something in their lives, is so beautiful. I hope my meaning is not misconstrued. So many people are so blessed and yet they still seem to be so unhappy, full of complaints and excuses, while the people who seemingly have more to complain about it are too often the ones determined not to let anything get them down. I just flipped through the pictures detailing how much weight you’ve lost thus far – I can only wish you the best of luck and that one day, you will find a cure to your physical pain. Either way, I commend you for your bravery and for taking charge of your life and for being so successful thus far – and also, to thank you for starting this blog to send a positive message to others.

    • Thanks so much for all of your kind words and encouragement, I am sorry that it has taken me a while to respond to your comment. I am like you in the fact that I love seeing people from all walks of life succeed, but it people who have disabilities and still achieve their goals and dreams are far beyond inspiring. As for me, compared to others I have no room to complain. No matter how much pain I am in at any given point, I still have all my limbs, am relatively healthy, and enjoy life. My motivation for wanting to lose this weight is my family, I have to be here for them, but the RSD really spurred me on. I did not want to give up and live a sad life! I have only just turned 31 so I still have a lot of life ahead of me, and I am determined to beat this condition :)

Thank you so much for following my blog. It really means a lot to me when someone follows. I have followed you back and cannot wait to read your blog.

      All the best,
      Brett

  9. Hello there Brett, I am so sorry to hear your story!

I do not have the same pain, but what I have is complications from a total knee replacement, you can read about it on my blog. But basically, it’s created issues in my thigh, we think a nerve thing, I now have frozen shoulder in BOTH shoulders as well as some chest pain we have no idea what it is. Eeek! But when I was 245 pounds, I ended up with the TKR and thought, there is NO way I will be able to lose weight. I lost a bit before I blew my knee, doing circuit training, but my knee was too shot, I couldn’t do it!

I am here to say, I have lost 95 pounds and the majority of that is with food! I don’t work out, hence my site ‘ thewalkerlady’ that really is about my walker. :) I have just been told I can walk again, and for me, it’s slow. It takes me over an hour to walk 1.5 miles.

My point is, the whole reason I started my site was to try and help people who have an injury and think they can’t lose weight, you can! Even if working out is limited!

I followed the Eat Clean diet, still do! It’s amazing, if nothing else, check it out!

I wish you the best on your journey and you are doing amazing!!! :) I look forward to following along!
