The clock is ticking, in fact it seems like it is ticking a little too fast. There are now just 14 days until my first 5K and I feel totally unprepared for it. I have come a long way in my running though, and I am really happy with that. just 7 weeks ago, I would have a myocardial infarction just thinking about running, and now I can cover 2 miles in about 30 minutes. My run on Saturday (yes, I am really late in posting this) didn’t go all that well. With the threat of severe weather breathing down my neck, my head was not in the right place, but even some running is better than none. Here is how my run went on Saturday.
As you can see from the picture, this run took place away from my normal area. With the threat of tornadoes, my wife and I decided to head south to Lone Grove, Oklahoma so that we could be near a storm shelter. The running track above is the track at Lone Grove High School. The track is open to the public and can be used at anytime (as long as the school does not need it for a track meet etc). I was supposed to complete Week 7 Day 3 on Friday, but we had tornadoes throughout the state. Saturday morning was going to be about the only chance I would get to complete the run. The weather was nasty. 100% humidity, strong winds, rain off and on, and the threat of storms over head. I really did not want to be outside. While I done my run early in the morning (8:45am) the atmosphere was so unstable that a twister could have formed at any time.
I did not complete the run as the program stated. I was supposed to run for 25 minutes, but the weather started getting a little worse, so I decided to end my run and head back to the safety of my in-laws house (where the storm shelter is). I ran for just under 19 minutes and covered 1.55 miles. Nothing great, but like I said, better than nothing. I felt good the whole time I was running, and never felt tired. I know I could have made the run easily, I just did not trust mother nature.
Today sees me start week 8 of the C25K challenge. Today’s run is 28 minutes. I know I should repeat Week 7 Day 3, so I guess I will just try to hit 25 minutes and if I feel like I can carry on I will see out the remaining 3 minutes that WK8 Day3 calls for. At least today the weather will be nice, no tornadoes or rain in sight. Just the way I like it. While I normally like to get my runs done in the morning, I will have to wait until late this afternoon or early this evening due to Drs appointments. I will post about it later on though, and hopefully it goes better than Saturday’s run.
Hope everyone has an awesome day,
Brett

I heard how much OK got hit with tornados. In the chicago area we had heavy rain and some hail. Right now we are having rain with high winds.
Yeah, it was pretty bad here in OK. I have heard that there is the potential for twisters in Chicago today, Stay safe
Dude, that’s some incredible dedication to your running plan to get out while dodging extreme weather! Good call on being safe and getting inside, though.
We wish you the best of luck on your upcoming 5K. It sounds like you’re preparing very well.
Be safe. The first of that line is heading into Baton Rouge now.
Wow! That is committment! You’re going to do great at your 5K, with a no quit attitude like that!
You are doing great but I think you made the right decision to go back inside…I know this race is important to you but nothing is more important than your safety so as far as I am concerened you made the right call. The text below is a direct copy/paste from Jeff Galloway’s facebook status…
**Boston Marathon endorses walk breaks. Even for the very fit athletes! The race organizers said “You should frequently take breaks by walking instead of running”.
For the first time in history, a major race has suggested that even trained runners take walk breaks. This is one of the breakthrough changes made by the BAA organizing committee to protect runners due to the significant heat expected on raceday, today. Course time was extended by one hour, taking the pressure off the charity runners and those who had missed some of the training and/or trained in cool weather all winter. May other races follow their lead.***
I agree with this…so don’t beat yourself up if you need to take a walk break…You are going to kill it Brett and what matters is crosssing that line, not how you cross it
I can’t wait to read your Race re-cap!
Keep pressing in — you will be there. I just bet you will seriously enjoy your first race.
Can’t wait to hear the details.
Good luck on your 5k! You are so inspiring! I love your determination and work ethic! So many people can benefit from you! Thank you!
