One of the biggest changes I have made since starting my lifestyle change is removing all refined, and manufactured products from my diet. No sugar, no artificial sweeteners, no white flour and so on. I found an interesting video that was aired on a Fox News Affiliate (yes I know, Fox) that talks about aspartame and how back in the 70′s it was not recommended for consumption. After a few peeps were fired over the findings, the product made it to market and it is now in more than 6000 products. It causes all sorts of problems and really should be avoided. Here is the video. I guess come to your own conclusions but I know that I will be staying well away.

It truly is sad that such toxins can be dealt such blows in the media only to be removed from products and recycled back in later when the concern has dwindled. A recent post of mine concerning aspartame unearthed this: “An astounding 80% of FDA food complaints have been about aspartame, yet you can find it on labels today.”
Even worse, in such instances as that with BPA, these chemicals only get removed when the public outcry reaches a certain level, and only to those products that they have found it in. The best way to protect your health is to avoid these chemicals and manipulated products, even if there are no studies to back up your reason to do so. Studies will come along in the distant future, but there is always a fresh batch ready to be released.

I hate it when I’m forced to attend a hosted lunch meeting and my choice is either “regular” or diet cola…and nutrasweet options outnumber regular choices by 5:1 or more. While I’m thankful that there’s a water option more often, now, than not…in earlier years, especially the 1990′s, this was a huge problem for me.
Validation! I try to avoid diet or fat-free anything…whole foods or Cheetos all the way (though less Cheetos these days). Great post.

In my weight loss ‘meetings’ many moons ago, all I used was artificial sweetener. Then about 6 months ago (slightly unrelated to the post) I was shocked by how much carbs were in them, about 92g per 100g and having a sweet tooth I would use crazy amounts of the stuff.
I switched to Stevia. I do get it imported but there is only >1g per 100g of carbs in it. Despite it costing more for me, I use only a fraction compared to Aspartame, and it really has helped me in losing weight.I am pretty sure that eventually lots of negative things will come out about Stevia but at least it is natural.
What an eye opener. It has now made me more determined to never use it again.

Have you had any experience with Stevia ? Im thinking about buying, but I am not finding much information about it…
I would say it is not safe. It has been used in South America for years as a sweetner, and is actually 200 times sweeter than sugar. From what I can find out in the 80′s a group of tests were performed on animals and the tests showed that the stevia had adverse effects on fertility and reproductive development and possible genetic mutations.
In 2008, the makers of Truvia and PureVia submitted research to the Food and Drug Administration regarding Reb A’s safety and petitioned for it to become a generally regarded as safe (GRAS) ingredient.
The FDA affirmed the GRAS status, but did not change the previous ruling on stevia. “Reb A is different than whole-leaf stevia or [other] stevia extracts, which can only be sold as dietary supplements,” says FDA spokesperson Michael Herndon. “Nobody has provided the FDA with evidence that whole-leaf stevia is safe.
I would stay away from it, and just get your sugar kick from natural sugars found in fruits
